PURPOSE OF THE ROLE




To work within the New Products Development team to provide a versatile electronic embedded control system design resource to enable new products to be developed that meet the required specification including cost, within the agreed timescale and project costs. This is an important new role, which is currently sub-contracted, to enable us to provide a faster service. Our ventilation products are effectively motor-driven appliances with microprocessor control which interface with various sensors and external controls including BMS and wireless systems. The person in this role will be able to programme, design the pcbs for functionality and to comply with the appropriate LVD and emc standards, carry out and design tests, fault-finding. In addition some mechanical/product design will be required.





KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY


§ To always work in a safe manner without putting himself, colleagues or members of the public at risk.

§ Together with Project Sponsors and Product Managers, to help define the functionality of the product.

§ To develop - from concept to implementation - inventive, innovative, manageable and cost-effective solutions to product development briefs.

§ To deliver within time, cost and performance expectations.

§ Work with suppliers to co-ordinate activities.

§ Work with manufacturing support engineers to help solve product or process issues as required.

§ To use the company processes where they exist. To suggest improvements to them.

§ To manage cost reduction exercises through design projects when required.

§ To ensure efficient, economical and effective use of project-based resources, including the laboratory.

§ To ensure that activities are carried out within the terms of the appropriate quality systems, e.g. ISO9001.

§ To work with project teams throughout the course of the project.

§ To keep stakeholders informed of progress, risks and status, and to provide guidance to them.

§ To keep aware of developments in relevant disciplines such as appropriate standards and regulations, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, design techniques and tools, FMEA, FEA, Taguchi testing, etc.

§ To attend communication meetings as requested. These are to include a weekly meeting to summarise progress on the project. In addition attendance and presentation at the monthly Project Review meeting.

§ Depending on experience the Appliance Control Engineer may have his work directed by a Senior Development Engineer or equivalent or may be responsible for his own project or projects.

§ To carry out any other reasonable tasks as requested by the Group Product Development Manager.

§ To travel to customers and suppliers as required, including internationally on occasion.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE



§ Preferably qualified to degree level in an Electrical or Electronic discipline.

§ Experience in a product development role.

§ An electrical products/domestic appliances background preferred with experience of International Standards and Approvals.

§ The ability to design electronic embedded systems to control motors, actuators, etc, and to interface with sensors and other controls.

§ To be proficient in the appropriate technical design packages (?? (PCB layout software) and, preferably, Autodesk Inventor).

§ Analytical skills, will build a theoretical model or simulation of the product or feature of the product.

§ The ability to 'make things happen'.

§ The ability to provide practical solutions to sometimes complex issues.

§ Problem solving and decision making ability.

§ Time management skills, numerate and articulate, computer literate.

§ Good communication and interpersonal skills.
